education

who needs school access? let’s make a (very long) list.

Kids, teachers, parents, grandparents, janitors, administrators, therapists, sports coaches, and administrative staff—people of all abilities and all ages who enter educational facilities on a daily or occasional basis to learn, play, work, visit, and make friends.

At Studio Pacifica, we have a special place in our practice for accessible education facilities. Some of us who need accommodation went to school prior to the ADA, some after. Some of us had children in schools prior to the ADA, some after.

Our professional expertise paired with first-person experience guides us—as does our specialized focus on best universal design practices and code regulations.

Today, thanks to state and Federal laws that mandate “mainstream settings” and “inclusive education”, design professionals have learned to take on the challenge in the most creative ways. Studio Pacifica helps design teams reach their goals by advising on everything from playgrounds (can a wheelchair roll on the surface?) to making sure parents can get into an auditorium or sports facility (would you want to miss your child starring in the play Annie?)

For education clients, Studio Pacifica advises on best practices, code compliance, and wayfinding that meet the needs of people of all abilities and ages. If a project requires community outreach, our team has experience planning for accessible meeting sites and moderating community discussions.
